the spaces in-between

Updated: Apr 8, 2022

You know I think I heard "the spaces in-between" in a movie. I think it was a Sandra Bullock movie - but I could be wrong. What does that really mean? When you are trying to make heads or tails of your life, I think it means those moments that we feel and then immediately dismiss. Like when you are working with the window open and a breeze blows in and brushes across your face like a warm kiss. Or maybe you are sitting at a traffic light and the lady crossing the street in front of you has a crazy purple hat on and it makes you smile.

To me, those seem like spaces in-between. In-between the rushing, the working, the "I have got to be there 10 minutes ago feeling" that overtakes and encompasses our lives.

My question is, how do I recognize, incorporate, appreciate and use those spaces when I am traveling through my day? I still get so pissed off when the guy in front of me is driving sooooo slow and it causes me to miss a light! I tried an experiment the other day. I had a day of driving in front of me and I thought to myself, (this is gonna sound morbid but it really isn't): what if when I got there I was gonna die? How would I spend this drive? Racing towards my destination flat out? I don't think so.

I slowed down. I went the speed limit (WOW that's a first for me). I didn't worry about that camper van pulling a boat in front of me, I just followed along. I looked at the scenery. I stopped once an hour. I took a couple videos. I delayed the trip. Funny thing, it only took about an hour longer than normal and I felt like instead of just a drive, it was part of the experience. Seems to me I made that 7 hour drive a space in-between.
