the chariot

The Chariot is card number seven in the deck and represents a quest for knowledge, but also symbolizes the need to find depth and spiritual connection.

The Hierophant_edited_edited.png

“Sometimes sheer will power is what is needed to move forward.

You must be strong to balance opposing forces.”

The card shows a man riding on a chariot made of flowing wings of cloudlike fabric. On the front of the chariot are two sphinxes* (lion’s body and human heads). There is a light sphinx and a dark sphinx. The man holds a wand in his hand. On his head he wears a wreath - crown. The sky behind him is full of stars.

*The Great Sphinx at Giza represents Ra-Horakhty, a form of the powerful sun god and is the incarnation of royal power and the protector of the temple doors.

There is a lot of symbolism in this card! Our Charioteer holds a Wand in his hand. Wands represent fire and energy that translate into ACTION. The two sphinxes are thought to represent opposing forces (good and evil; right and wrong). Sphinxes are lions’ bodies (strength) and human heads (intellect), meaning the charioteer has the strength and will power to accomplish his goals. The stars in the sky connect the rider to the heavens which suggests divine influence. The sphinx is a symbol of the sun and would suggest both power and strength.

Choosing this card today is dramatic! Sometimes sheer will power is what is needed to move forward. You must be strong to balance opposing forces. Oftentimes it takes more than just balance, but brute force to hold things together. Be it physical strength or will power, the card is telling you that you can do it.

I cannot help but notice the physical aspects of this card. Are you competing in a sports competition? Do you have a labor-intensive job that needs to be done? It could mean that your lawn needs mowed, and it is 95 degrees out. This task takes strength and will power. Whatever your mission, only you can make it work. It is time to CRACK THE WHIP!

Sometimes you know exactly what you need to accomplish. But if you don’t, try pairing the card of the day with this reading to see if your activity is mental or physical.
